With Fulfillment 4 weclapp, you ship dangerous goods directly from weclapp: you maintain the UN number and a few fields on the item, the app recognizes dangerous goods packages on its own, passes the dangerous goods data to the carrier, calculates the ADR points total and creates the transport document. It decides Limited Quantities with a density factor on the item, a special feature of Fulfillment 4 weclapp. The classification of your substances and your responsibility as a consignor remain with you; the app takes the writing and calculation work off your hands. On this page you'll find what you set up, what the app does with it and which carrier can do what.

Setup: what you maintain on the item

Dangerous goods start at the weclapp item. We create the fields with you during setup as additional fields:

  • Dangerous goods (yes/no): marks the item; the app automatically recognizes packages with such items as dangerous goods.
  • UN number: mandatory. With it, the app fetches class, classification code, packing group, subsidiary hazard, tunnel code, points factor and designation from the DPD dangerous goods database.
  • Dangerous goods packaging: the packaging code, mandatory for DPD, optional for Dachser.
  • N.O.S. designation, LQ marking, density factor: optional, depending on the substance.
  • Net weight: the standard field in weclapp, the basis of all weight information.

Typical stumbling blocks: net weight 0, a UN number that the database does not know, or the LQ marking on only one of several items with the same UN number. All fields in detail: Dangerous goods master data on the weclapp item.

What the app does with it

  • Detection at the package: if a package contains a dangerous goods item, it is automatically treated as a dangerous goods shipment.
  • Substance data from the database: the app matches the UN number against the DPD dangerous goods database, checks daily for new versions and keeps the data in the cache for at most seven days.
  • Weight per substance: net weight of the item times quantity in the package. If the same item appears in several bill of materials line items, it counts only once. More on this: Net weight and density factor.
  • Points total: the app calculates the points according to ADR 1.1.3.6 and notes the result in the transport document. More on this: ADR points and the 1,000-point rule.
  • Limited Quantities: LQ check per UN number, with density factor for liquids. More on this: Limited Quantities (LQ) from weclapp.
  • Transport document: as a PDF from your item data, with emergency contact and points total. More on this: Transport document automatically from weclapp. How the document gets to the right printer: Print automation with weclappOS.
  • At the packing table: dangerous goods packages go through the same process as all others, see Scan workflow for weclapp. For exports, the customs documents are added: Zoll-Automatisierung 4 weclapp.

What this looks like day to day is shown in the field report on the blog: shipping dangerous goods with weclapp.

What the app does not take care of for you

  • Classification: the app does not classify substances. Which UN number an item has is up to you to decide, for example based on the safety data sheet.
  • Lithium batteries: are handled via their UN number like any other dangerous goods.
  • Air and sea freight: the app works according to ADR for road transport, not IATA or IMDG.
  • Hazard labels and markings: we flexibly print hazard labels, LQ markings or warning plates via the app's template engine, on the printer you designate for it.
  • Responsibility: the app checks mandatory information and calculates. You remain the consignor within the meaning of the ADR, with all obligations.

If any of this is missing for your shipping, talk to us; we can quickly build a lot of it together with the carrier.

What works where

DPD: Full connection via the DPD web service: UN number, class, packing group, packaging code, tunnel code and net weight go to DPD, plus points total and transport document; LQ shipments without a document. If sender details or emergency number are missing or the UN number is unknown, the app does not book. The transport document is created right after booking. The DPD Cloud connection does not transport dangerous goods.

Gebrüder Weiss: net weight, class and packing group to Gebrüder Weiss, points total, transport document with storage in weclapp and optional printing, LQ. The app reports incomplete information as a warning; it does not accept more than 50 dangerous goods lines per shipment.

Dachser: dangerous goods data per transport line, points total, transport document and LQ. For LQ you need your Dachser customer dangerous goods ID; without it, the item is declared as full dangerous goods. The app reports incomplete information as a warning and books anyway.

FedEx: dangerous goods data and emergency contact are passed to FedEx, for FedEx services with dangerous goods approval.

Kühne+Nagel: the road booking connection detects dangerous goods items automatically.

Austrian Post: Limited Quantities only. The app aborts shipments with full dangerous goods before booking.

DHL, GLS, Deutsche Post, DB Schenker, Swiss Post: no dangerous goods via the app today; the dangerous goods switch is deactivated there. All connections at a glance: Shipping carriers for weclapp.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I ship dangerous goods with weclapp?

Yes, with Fulfillment 4 weclapp. With DPD, Gebrüder Weiss and Dachser with dangerous goods data, points total, transport document and LQ; with FedEx with dangerous goods data and emergency contact; with Kühne+Nagel with automatic dangerous goods detection; and with Austrian Post as Limited Quantities.

Does the app count gross or net?

Net. The app takes the net weight from the weclapp item times the quantity in the package, not the gross weight of the package. Details: Net weight and density factor.

Do I need a transport document for Limited Quantities?

For pure LQ shipments, the app does not create a transport document. You still have to inform the carrier about the LQ dangerous goods (ADR 3.4.12), and the packages need the LQ marking. Details: Limited Quantities (LQ) from weclapp.

Can I ship lithium batteries?

Yes. Lithium batteries are handled via their UN number like any other dangerous goods. The classification under the special provisions remains with you.

Who remains the consignor and is liable? Do I need instruction/training?

You remain the consignor, with all obligations under the ADR. The app checks mandatory information and calculates; it accepts no liability. Instruction of employees and the question of whether you need a dangerous goods safety adviser, you clarify with your dangerous goods specialist.

Do I need a dangerous goods authorization in the carrier contract?

Clarify beforehand with your carrier whether your contract covers dangerous goods. The app passes on the data; the agreement with the carrier is your responsibility. For Dachser, you additionally need your customer dangerous goods ID for LQ.
