QR code login at the packing table: sign in without a password

Scan-to-login via QR label instead of a password: secure for shared packing tables and handhelds.

At the packing station, people and shifts take turns while the device stays. Passwords then get written on slips of paper, or people are never logged out at all. With scan-to-login, a Fulfillment 4 weclapp user account signs in via QR label: one scan, no typing, even after a session has expired, straight from any screen. The label carries no password but a revocable token. How that works, what it secures and what it does not is explained here.

How it works

01

Create the label

In user management, an admin creates an A6 QR label for the packing station account. The code is shown only once, so print it right away and stick it to the workstation or the handheld holster.

02

On the login page, scan the QR code with a 2D scanner, done. If a session expires, a prompt "Scan the packing station QR code to sign in again" appears on every screen, and work continues without a detour.

03

In the background

The code contains a token ID and a secret that is stored on the server only as a hash. On scan, it is exchanged for a short-lived login; roles and permissions remain those of the account.

04

Renew and revoke

If a label gets lost, the admin creates a new one; the old one then stops working, and exactly one label is valid per account. A label can also be revoked directly in the dialog, which ends the account's running sessions.

Who it's for

Shared devices

Businesses with several packers at shared packing stations or handhelds (Zebra, Honeywell) in browser or web app mode.

Shift changes in the team

Teams with shift changes, where sessions expire regularly and nobody should type passwords.

Access per account

Admins who want to control access per account and revoke it at any time; for separate workstations, you create a separate account per workstation.

Limits, honestly

The label can be photographed

Anyone who photographs the label can sign in until a new one is created or the old one is revoked. Placement and regular replacement are your countermeasures; the app slows down repeated attempts and gives no details about the reason for failed attempts.

No time tracking

Scan-to-login signs in a user account. It is not linked to time tracking or to assigning individual scans to people.

Not a replacement for user management

The label replaces the password at the packing station, not user management: you keep maintaining accounts, roles and permissions in the app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one label for several packing tables?

One label always applies to one account. You can print it several times and stick it to several packing tables, and everyone then signs in under that account. If you want to be able to revoke workstations separately, create a separate account per workstation. If you create a new label for an account, the old one becomes invalid immediately.

Does this also work on the handheld?

Yes. The app can be installed as a web app on handhelds, as far as their browser supports it; the built-in 2D scanner reads the QR code like any other barcode.
