Shipping Dangerous Goods with weclapp: ADR Check and Accompanying Documents in the Packing Process

One shipment, one aerosol, one transposed digit

Spray cans and lithium batteries can, depending on the product and classification, count as dangerous goods under ADR. If the right UN number is missing from the shipping data or classification and quantity don't match, a shipment can get stuck with the carrier or be rejected at the hub. For the warehouse team, in the worst case this means: unpack the shipment, correct the data and restart the shipping. This is exactly where Fulfillment 4 weclapp comes in: recurring check and documentation steps can be integrated into the packing process, provided the master data in the ERP is maintained cleanly.

The 1,000-point rule in the shipping process

ADR 1.1.3.6 contains exemptions for certain transports. Whether they apply depends, among other things, on the correct dangerous goods classification, the transport category and the quantity transported. For the shipping process, this means: the underlying item data must be complete and professionally verified; the software can derive the implemented points calculation from it and provide the result to the packing process.

In Fulfillment 4 weclapp, you flag the item as dangerous goods and maintain the required details such as UN number, packing group and other carrier-relevant fields. In the supported DPD Public WS process, the app calculates the ADR points from this, takes limited quantities into account according to the stored logic and, if needed, can generate an ADR transport document. Professional responsibility for classification and shipping release remains with the responsible persons at the shipper.

The principle behind it is the same as in the rest of the shipping process in Fulfillment 4 weclapp: with EAN scanning enabled, the label is created in the packing process, and tracking data flows back into the weclapp shipment in the supported completion flow. For dangerous goods, the configured ADR check is added as an additional step. For the warehouse team, the flow stays clear: scan, have it checked, output the label and available accompanying documents.

Carriers compared: different dangerous goods functions

Not every shipping carrier treats dangerous goods the same way. Fulfillment 4 weclapp maps these differences carrier by carrier, so the respectively supported function is used in the packing process.

DPD: ADR points in the Public WS process

The connection via DPD Public Web Services supports the ADR points calculation, the handling of limited quantities and the generation of an ADR transport document in the intended process. The DPD Cloud service does not support this dangerous goods flow; correspondingly configured dangerous goods shipments are not processed there as regular Cloud shipments.

Gebrüder Weiss: dangerous goods data and central emergency contact

For freight shipments, the Gebrüder Weiss connection takes over dangerous goods line items from the correspondingly flagged weclapp items, including UN number, official shipping name, class and packing group. For configured non-LQ shipments, a centrally stored ADR emergency contact can also be carried in the generated transport document. If several packages belong to one shipment, Fulfillment 4 weclapp transmits them as line items of one transport order.

Kühne+Nagel: dangerous goods data in the Road Booking

For items flagged as dangerous goods, the Kühne+Nagel connection takes over, among other things, UN number and packing group into the booking. A commercial invoice provided in the fulfillment process can additionally be passed to the Road Booking. This keeps the relevant shipping information linked to the order, without having to be captured again at the packing table.

Österreichische Post: limited quantities

For Österreichische Post, dangerous goods shipping is in the current connection provided exclusively as Limited Quantities (LQ). Non-LQ dangerous goods are blocked before they are processed as a regular Post shipment. This gives the warehouse team a clear response early on and lets it choose a suitable shipping alternative.

My position

For me, dangerous goods data belongs in one central, maintained place: the weclapp item. Not in an Excel list at the packing table and not solely in the experience of individual people. If the flagging and required fields are professionally verified, Fulfillment 4 weclapp can integrate recurring calculation, transmission and documentation steps carrier-specifically into the shipping process. And where an interface has a limit, the software should say so as clearly as a good colleague would: this shipping route doesn't fit this shipment.

Fulfillment 4 weclapp offers more than 14 shipping connections, including direct carrier APIs, shipping platforms and other shipping processes. Dangerous goods functions are integrated carrier-specifically for several of them. For assortments with batteries, aerosols, chemicals or other ADR-relevant items, this creates a traceable packing process from within weclapp.
