A fictional customer pays €59.90 through a payment provider. That amount often does not appear in your bank account. What appears is the payout: many payments from a period, minus fees and refunds, in a single transfer. When and in what form payouts are made differs by provider and product. The terms are in the provider's documentation.
That is why the direct comparison "invoice versus bank transfer" fails. The difference is made up of fees, refunds, and payments that are still in transit.
From an accounting perspective, three levels help:
- Level 1, order and invoice: The invoice documents revenue and the receivable.
- Level 2, payment: The customer has paid, and the money is with the provider.
- Level 3, payout: Depending on the provider, the money arrives in your bank account as a bulk amount or as a transfer of the balance. The payout is not revenue, it is a money transfer.
Each level has its own document. This does not replace tax advice.
